Maine Chamber Urges Congress to Pass Legislation to Avoid Government Shutdown

9/30/2025

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce is calling on Congress to act quickly to pass a continuing resolution and prevent a federal government shutdown.

Statement from President and CEO Patrick Woodcock:
"The economy does not need additional uncertainty, and a federal government shutdown would create a ripple effect of uncertainty for employers, workers, and communities across Maine. Essential services that families and businesses rely on would be disrupted, undermining confidence and exacerbating a slowing economy.

The impacts of a shutdown could extend from delayed federal contracts and services to the possibility of closing Acadia National Park during the height of leaf-peeping season — a closure that would impact the local economy and harm small businesses that depend on fall visitors.

We strongly encourage both parties to work together quickly to resolve this impasse, pass a continuing resolution now, and avoid further self-inflicted setbacks to Maine’s economy and America’s competitiveness."

I've lived in this beautiful state all my life. (40 Years). I'm an Independent. I currently work for one of our local school districts and Im proud to serve the members of my community.

Over the past 5 years, thus state has gone downhill faster then a bobsled in a race! One of the biggest problems is the fact that the leaders are putting politics over the people. It's disgraceful!!!! It's childish!!! It doesn't help anybody. The leaders on both sides would rather argue over political ideologies then actually focus on the real issue with is our current financial system. It's a system that wasn't built to last. As a concerned citizen, Our members of congress need to put politics aside, and focus on the people of this state.

If it continues we new representatives for Maine.
Collins - King - Pingree need to go.
These three have made a fortune on our backs.
And Mills wants a shot to do the same.
My votes will be for new people these three only know how to line their pockets. Funny how they are millionaires against millionaires.
It's like listening to Clinton tell us why the rich are bad.
Career politicians need to go not one of these four care for anything but their pockets.

Every state that votes democrates into office needs to remember times like this. Almost every single shutdown has rested firmly on their shoulders. The president may not be able to do anything about congress & the senate, but WE can. We are the ones that vote them in, & it's out continued votes that keep them there. You may not like the president, but don't make the people suffer for it.

WHY do democrats keep the same distructive people in office for decades? The average person can clearly see the wrong being done, especialy the working class & retirees on social security.
I'm disabled, on SSI, and food benifits make up about a quarter of my monthly budget... DHHS shuts down completely next month. No food stamps, no WIC, and most other programs will suffer the same. Of course, that's something most democrats aren't affected by, Unless their jobs are deemed "non-essential".

A weakening economy would be exacerbated by the disruption of vital services that businesses and households depend on.
