FEMA encourages Maine businesses to prepare now for hurricane season

As the 2022 hurricane season is upon us (and expected to be “above-average” in activity and intensity), the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) as asked us to share with you some information to help businesses to prepare for disasters. Let’s start with some stats:
  • 40% of businesses that do not have emergency plans in place do not re-open after a major incident.
  • Being unprepared for emergencies can have catastrophic consequences for businesses, owner investment and income, and the lives of employees and associates.
  • Preparing for emergencies makes good business sense. When businesses and its employees are prepared, business interruption is minimized and operations can recover faster; This allows businesses to best serve its customers and community in time of need, which strengthens customer loyalty and greatly benefits the bottom line.

FEMA offers several FEMA Region I – Private Sector Resources online. There is also more detailed information about the critical preparedness tools and resources that FEMA provides to the public available at www.ready.gov. For more information, please contact Bruce Brodoff, FEMA Region I Private Sector Liaison / External Affairs Specialist, by calling (617) 513-2582 or emailing [email protected].

It’s always smart to be proactive, especially with hurricane season growing more unpredictable each year. The stat about 40% of unprepared businesses never reopening is a serious wake-up call. Whether it’s reviewing insurance policies, creating a communication plan, or backing up essential data, small steps now can make a huge difference later. Appreciate the reminder and resources—definitely sharing this with a few local business owners I know.
